When author Malcolm Gladwell said “Ten thousand hours is the magic number of greatness”, he captured one part of the complex debate about what defines mastery.

Australian circus superstars Gravity and Other Myths are masters of the impossible and this is their celebration of the overwhelming amount of time, sweat and joyous invention required to do what they do.

Over the course of an hour, accompanied by a driving, dynamic and intricate percussion based live score, eight world class acrobats investigate physical skill; how we obtain it, how we perfect it, and how it can transform our lives. Through challenge, repetition, game play and blunt daring they guide us from the world of the possible, past the limit to what lies beyond.

A worldwide hit, Ten Thousand Hours is a love letter to our bodies and the extraordinary things they let us do every day.

It is an invitation to watch the work behind the work and a celebration of the distinct physical language and joyous bravery that defines Gravity and Other Myths.

About the Company

Gravity & Other Myths is a circus company with roots in Adelaide, Australia. They utilise an honest approach to performance to create work with a focus on human connection and acrobatic virtuosity. Through this, GOM hopes to maintain an exceptional and diverse artistic program. Their work strives to nurture human connection while challenging the genre of circus through conceptual sophistication and acrobatic virtuosity. They employ an honest approach to performance, illuminating the complexities of humanity through genuinity, humour and physical prowess. GOM’s predominantly ensemble driven creative process encourages their artists to engage deeply with the work they are inhabiting and allows true investment in and commitment to the company’s core values.

After forming 2009 as a group of young Adelaide artists with a passion for circus and physical theatre, they’ve spent the past 13 years growing steadily and creating six critically acclaimed main stage works. ‘A Simple Space’, our first work, achieved huge international success, receiving multiple awards and having performed close to 1000 times across 34 countries. Our subsequent work ‘Backbone’ has been touring for over past 5 years receiving awards (including 3 Helpmann award nominations) and critical acclaim worldwide. ‘Out Of Chaos’ premiered in the 2019 Adelaide Festival, receiving the 2019 Helpmann Award for Best Physical Theatre. ‘The Pulse’ and ‘MACRO’ are one of the company’s largest and most ambitious works this far and probably the largest contemporary circus works in Australian history! These have elevated their artistic profile worldwide.

The company has been honoured to see the circus industry, wider arts community and audiences worldwide embracing the unique playfulness, honesty and physical mastery in their work.

    Jacob Randell

    he/him

Jacob was following in the footsteps of his father and two brothers in pursuing a career in engineering. He then raised eyebrows by putting his studies on hold to embark on international touring as a full time acrobat.

A founding member of what has become one of Australia’s largest and most successful contemporary circus companies, Jacob attended Adelaide youth circus school, Cirkidz, from age 9. What started out as a hobby, soon became a career, when he and five others from his Cirkidz class formed Gravity & Other Myths and toured with their first show Freefall. The creation and premiere of A Simple Space in early 2013 cemented the transition from hobby to career. The group took the show to Edinburgh Festival Fringe and received so much booking interest that Jacob deferred his degree to take part in the international tour. Jacob has been performing, creating and touring full time with GOM ever since.

In his off-stage time while touring, Jacob completed a Bachelor of Business Administration and Management and a Graduate Diploma in Financial Planning. He also contributes to the company’s management as Financial Controller. In addition to ensuring the GOM team is functioning at its peak, Jacob is involved with implementing the company’s business strategy and loves the challenge of problem solving on the fly.
